Newsletter
Welcome to the Crewe & District Model Boat Club Newsletter giving you up to date information on current events and activities for the benefit of members and visitors to our club.
We are now sailing at Boundary Park Lake on Knutsford Road, Cranage, Holmes Chapel. Our Club sailings are on a Sunday from 1pm to 4 pm and on Wednesday afternoon and evenings, light permitting.
Sailing model boats is an enjoyable pastime but we should all be aware that there is an issue with safety whilst at the sailing site. Please see our section on safe sailing and emergency for full details. All persons attending or sailing at Crewe and District Model Boat Club events do so entirely at their own risk
We have not renewed our permission from Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council to sail on Nantwich Lake, Shrewbridge Road, Nantwich. Due to the salt content and variable water level we have chosen to move to the Boundary Park Lake and will no longer use Nantwich Lake as a club sailing venue.
The present launching jetty at the lake belongs to the Sea Scouts and whilst it has proved very useful as a launching platform the approach slope becomes very slippery and should not be used. There are steps to the side of the jetty and whilst these are not very secure they do provide a safer approach to the jetty.
An alternative jetty adjacent to the existing jetty has been constructed and we now have our own safe access to the lake.
The lake at Boundary Park is a vast area of open water and is well suited to all model boats. Sailing boats are able to use this large area to good effect and the depth of water allows for all sizes of yachts.
We have a growing interest in model yachts and are now affiliated to The MYA. Individual membership is available through the club for a small additional fee for any interested members. Details are available from the secretary.
To assist any prospective yachting members Brian Clewes has agreed to be our yachting representative and will appear as such in all club literature and contact information.
We continue to welcome new members and our membership remains open.
Visiting modelers are especially welcome with or without their models and we hope to see more in the coming year.
We attended the Militaire show on 24th February, and the Reaseheath Open Day on 18th May, and will be attending the Malpas Vintage Machinery Association Yesteryear Rally on 6th and 7th September.
Our Gala Tent was used to good effect at the Reaseheath Open Day and we enjoyed a really fine and dry day. The model boats we provide for the public to sail had, after many years of service, reached a stage where they were becoming un-seaworthy. After careful research and the sterling services of Bill Lucy we have replaced them with our own fiberglass hull design. Several members agreed to put their own design tops onto the hulls and we had a very mixed fleet for our first show at Reaseheath. They proved their worth and we managed to provide six boats for the public to sail pretty well all day from 11 am until 5 pm.
The catering was again ably provided by Richard with help from Benjamin and Sebastian. We all enjoyed the constant flow of tea and coffee and the mouth watering Bacon and sausage butties! so well done and thank you.
Ten members and two juniors attended and gave sterling help with the erection and dismantling of the tent. As well as the roped off public sailing area we sailed on the main lake and attracted much attention with our larger models, especially the submarine.
We raised over £70 from donations, which will go towards offsetting the costs of providing the boats and Gala Tent as in previous years.
A really big thank you to all who attended and made for such an enjoyable day.
Our monthly meetings are at 8pm on the second Wednesday at the LMR Club in Goddard Street, Crewe. We will possibly hold some meetings at the lake but this will very much depend on the weather.
Any such meetings will be advised in good time to allow all members the opportunity to attend.
