Pond Yacht

Built on a 4’ fiberglass hull bought from a fellow club member. Based model on an article in Model Boats as I wanted a gaff rigged boat to sail on club waters. We have a weed problem and pond yachts have fewer problems with the sleek keel. Planked the deck and fitted an access hatch to give room to fit radio gear. New rudder fitted in line with keel. Sails from linen bed sheets home sewn. Cabin fitted. sails very well and ballast made removeable to make easier to transport.

Steam Picket Boat

Based on a Deans fiberglass hull. Built to make use of home built steam boiler and twin oscillator engine built by John Moore a founder member of the Crewe MBC. Rear cabin is wood and casing is a fiberglass moulding. Extensive use of brass fittings all made on my lathe. I have made the ship wheel turn in time with the rudder by using working lines down the deck to the rear grating and then to the rudder. Has sailed under electric power and will shortly make maiden steam sail.

RMS Olympic

Scratch built at 1:100 scale from plans by Dr R Haan. Built in conjunction with Bill Lucy who built RMS Titanic at the same time. Plank on frame with fiberglass between the frames inside, glass cloth and epoxy resin outside. Three propellers, one 4 blade and two 3 blade. All direct drive from Model Motors Direct 555 (Mk2) motors each controlled by an Mtronik 15amp Viper ESC.Power is from a 38amp 12v SLA. Overall ballast is 70Kg, 1000 LEDS used in the portholes (3mm & 5mm) wired in parallel and fed from 4 LM317 IC regulators. Two each side as 3 & 5 mm LEDS need different current ratings to match brightness. I use a 434Mhz remote voltage switcher to control the lights as this allows fine adjustment to suit the ambient lighting. Further lights will be fitted to the cabins, boat deck and walkways. Windows were water jet cut by Steve Tranter and will be glazed with printed frames on OHP film. The railings and various winches are still to be fitted.

Libbeccio

An early toy model tug of French origin. Original all plastic converted to RC in the 1960’s. Sailed on and off until 2002 when a major refit of the hull was required. Mould taken from original and fiberglass hull made. Upperworks refitted and new running gear and rudder. Sails as good as ever and the club have used the hull mould to produce model tugs for use by the public at any shows we attend
